Heavenly Father, creator and sustainer of life, we acknowledge that all things were created for the manifestation of your glory in your eternal power, wisdom, and goodness. You fashioned all life and crowned your creative acts with Adam and Eve, who uniquely bore your image, were endued with the breath of life, were given creative capacities, and charged to fill the earth for your glory. You declared your creation good, but we have sinned against you. You were grieved by the murder of Abel, and are ever grieved by the unjust taking of all human life. Forgive us Lord where we have aided and abetted the culture of death, where we have preferred our own ways over yours, where we have worshiped our autonomous desires over and against your benevolent ways.
We hear the blood of millions crying out for justice and acknowledge that you are the avenger of the wicked through the administration of the civil magistrate. We grieve that our magistrate turns a blind eye to the ways of wickedness and there is no justice in the land for the millions whose lives were aborted. But we rejoice that you have raised up a mighty host of legislators who fear your name and speak on behalf of the departed. Lord, grant success to these servants. Aid us also in the battle against the unseen principalities, the wicked host who always seeks to thwart your ways. May the evil one be subjected to open shame as your kingdom grows more and more through the reign of Christ Jesus, the king of kings and lord of lords.
Though the blood of millions cries out, we thank you for the blood of one which cries out even louder to pardon, forgive, cleanse, and restore all those who have rebelled against your ways. As your justice was vindicated in the cross so that your love and mercy might overflow to the lost sinner, aid us as we seek to be shaped more and more into the image of Christ, who taught us to overcome evil with good, to bless those who curse us, to provide drink and food for the one who wishes us harm. May his compassion for the depressed and downcast be ours. May his compassion for the notorious sinners of his day be ours. May his love for the women and children be ours. May his love even for the infants brought before his presence be ours. We marvel that even John the Baptist, in the womb of his mother, leaped for joy in the presence of Jesus. We thank you for Mary’s courageous faith to bear the son of God in her womb and for Joseph who stood by her in this incredible miracle of the incarnation. We thank you that it is through incarnation your kingdom was made manifest and we daily pray that your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. O God, who wonderfully created, and yet more wonderfully restored, the dignity of human nature: Grant that we may share the divine life of him who humbled himself to share our humanity, your Son Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
