Infants and Rich Young Ruler as a Lukan Role Reversal

If you read Luke 18:15-30 as a joint unit (pericope), then the contrast between the helpless infants and rich young ruler really jump out. The irony is that the infants are more fit for the kingdom than the “godly” young man. Just another Lukan role reversal of exalting the humble and humbling the exalted.

There is a lesson to be learned here for parents who raise their kids to look like the rich young ruler and affirm the external as evidence of the internal. Everything was right, except for the heart; and we’ve all been told that the heart of the matter is a matter of the heart.
