The Church as Inn for the Weary Pilgrim

samaritan innWeary travelers have, for some time, stopped at inns for rest. An inn would provide a bath, meal, and good cheer in fellowship. The church gathered is essentially such a stop for rest. Baptism is our washing, communion is our meal, and the Word preached is analogous to the instruction for the journey often provided by the innkeeper. The church is an outpost of salvific rest for the pilgrim, receiving Word and Sacrament as nourishment and cheer on our destination to the consummate sabbath rest.
